An apple gives a plain bowl of oats a little sweetness without turning breakfast into dessert. Grating half of it lets the fruit soften into the oats; chopping the rest gives you small pieces to bite into.

The thickness is yours to choose. Oats continue to soak up liquid even after you turn off the heat, so stop cooking while the mixture is a little looser than you want in the bowl. Add honey only after tasting the apple.

Ingredients

Method

  1. Prepare the apple

Wash the apple. Grate half and cut the other half into small cubes, discarding the core. The peel can stay on.

  2. Simmer the oats

Put oats, milk, water, grated apple, cinnamon, and salt in a saucepan. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, then reduce heat and cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring often.

  3. Add texture

Stir in the apple cubes and cook for another 2 minutes. Meanwhile, toast nuts or seeds in a dry small pan for 1–2 minutes, watching carefully.

  4. Serve warm

Divide oats into two bowls and scatter over the nuts or seeds. Taste before adding honey. Loosen with a splash of milk if the oats are too thick.

Small details that help

Oat choice changes timing

Rolled oats suit this recipe. Instant oats cook faster; steel-cut oats need much longer and more liquid.

Prevent a sticky bottom

Stir along the base of the saucepan, especially as the oats thicken.

No need for perfect cubes

Small uneven pieces are fine. Large chunks need more time to soften.

Substitutions & ways to make it yours

Nut-free crunch

Use pumpkin or sunflower seeds if suitable for your household.

Different fruit

Replace apple with a firm pear. Very ripe pear may need no extra sweetener.

Dairy-free

Choose an unsweetened plant milk and maple syrup rather than honey if you want a vegan bowl.

A couple of useful questions

Can I make it ahead?

Yes. Refrigerate promptly, then warm with extra milk or water because oats thicken substantially when chilled.

Should I peel the apple?

Only if you dislike the texture of cooked peel. Washing the fruit and removing the core is enough for this method.
